Project Title: Martin the Hero Driving Question: Why is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a historical superhero?
Project Standards: Social Studies History SSKH1 Identify the national holidays and describe the people and/or events celebrated. e. Describe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Civics & Government SSKCG2 The student will retell stories that illustrate positive character traits and will explain how the people in the stories show the qualities of honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, self-control, moderation, and accomplishment. ELA ELAGSEKRI1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. ELAGSEKW2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. ELAGSEKSL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. ELAGSEKSL4: Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.
Project Summary: The focus of this unit is the accomplishments and contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. to American society. This project will focus on learning about who and what Dr. King did during the civil rights movement. We will discuss the positive character traits and will explain how he showed the qualities of honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, self-control, moderation, and accomplishment. We will also talk about how Dr. King lived through social barriers, restrictions, and obstacles and how he had to overcome them.
The students will RESEARCH (through videos, visuals, and text) how Dr. King was involved in the civil rights movement.
The students will UNDERSTAND the character traits of Dr. King and how she can be compared to a superhero because of how brave and courageous he had to be to integrate an all white school.
The students will BE ABLE TO prepare a presentation of life size student superheroes that gives reasons why Dr. King can be considered a superhero and the impact of what he did on them and the future.
Public Product: The students will develop a Life Size Superhero presentation to show what they have researched to present to community members.
